Desktop virtualization or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) as it’s also sometimes known as describes the process of separating or abstracting a personal desktop computer (including its operating system, applications, files and data) from the physical hardware on which it is usually deployed. This “virtualized copy” of the desktop is then hosted on a server in the data center, typically running as a virtual machine on a hypervisor, instead of on the local PC.
For an end user, this means that users are able to access their desktops, including all of their applications and data, remotely from any end-point device anywhere. For the IT administrator, this means a reduction in the overall desktop operational costs as centralized delivery, management and control of virtual desktops bring new levels of capital efficiency while streamlining security and compliance.
